How artificial intelligence is changing the world
If we go back in time, it becomes clear that the advent of artificial intelligence has been predicted for a very long time. However, it was never clear what this artificial form of intelligence would look like in practice, let alone what it is today. The fact that thousands of students all over the world today are studying artificial intelligence on a daily basis, nobody saw that coming. The questions that remain are: What exactly is artificial intelligence, which industries is it affecting and how big is it? And to make it a bit more personal and appropriate, we would like to show you how you can benefit from artificial intelligence today. In an application where you might be able to make a lot of money!
What is artificial intelligence?
If we look at the definition of artificial intelligence, in short AI, we see the following: "devices that respond to data or impulses from their environment, and make independent decisions based on that data or impulse. So AI is not about computing power, but about the ability to learn and make decisions independently".
The definition already brings us a little closer to the practical application, but a look into the history of technology followed by a number of examples will make much more clear. The artificial intelligence we know today has its origins with a group of philosophers who began to discuss the workings of the human brain. They stated that our choices can be approached by means of mathematical signs and formulas. This line of thought eventually led to a group of scientists working with an electronic brain. This took place in the year 1940 when the term artificial intelligence was nowhere to be found, just an experiment to make an electronic version of the human brain. When fifteen years later research into the technology really started, the scientists discovered that their task turned out to be a lot more complicated than previously predicted. Due to a lack of computing power and financial resources, development came to a standstill for years until a number of technological revolutions took place.
A number of factors have been the main reason for the current blossoming of artificial intelligence. As computers became more powerful, smarter and easier to use, more and more data was created. This data is used for the automated learning of artificial intelligence under the denominator 'machine learning' or 'deep learning'. The large amounts of data are processed and analysed by means of written pieces of code. The analysis that is made is ultimately the means by which the artificial intelligence can make its own decisions and thus learn independently on the basis of the analyses. What happens behind the scenes of AI is very complicated, but the applications we see today make it a lot easier to understand.
Where is artificial intelligence applied in our daily lives?
Since governments and large corporations have invested heavily in artificial intelligence in recent years, it has become an integral part of our daily lives. A number of practical applications of artificial intelligence that you encounter every day;
Opening your phone with face ID
It's not common on every phone yet, but all new phones nowadays are unlocked using your own face. Just looking at the screen of your phone gives the device the chance to let the internal AI do its job. More than 30,000 invisible dots are placed on your head to analyse your current face and compare it with the photo you've set up. If it matches enough, your phone is unlocked.
The media has changed a lot in the last decade. Where at first it was only television, radio and newspapers, nowadays social media is the scene of a lot of news and updates. The mechanisms behind applications such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube spend all day analyzing and comparing your data. By using artificial intelligence, the application can tune your news overview to your wishes. Everything is set up so that your user experience is optimal.
Digital voice assistance
In an iPhone or Android phone nowadays it is a standard feature to be able to control the device using your voice. More recently the 'smartspeakers' from Google and Amazon have been added. An Alexa or Google Home in your home gives you the ability to quickly look things up, create shopping lists, set up music or call someone. Whatever it may be, it is stored to learn from in the future. All these voice assistants use artificial intelligence to help you better. It adapts suggestions based on past behavior.
What can I use artificial intelligence for?
Artificial intelligence is a term that is very exciting for some people. The consequences of an artificial brain that is in many cases smarter than that of man can be catastrophic. Suppose this brain soon finds that man is superfluous, what happens then? These are thoughts that are often unfounded and circulate purely out of ignorance. To disprove this, we want to share some applications of artificial intelligence that you can apply today.
A personal assistant
We've already set an example, but artificial intelligence can very well be used for a personal assistant. If you use an application like Lyra or similar it will learn from every bit of data what it gets. All new information will be used by the application to give suggestions for example;
- Restaurants in the area
- Interesting content to consume
- Persons to contact
- Suggestions for activities to undertake
And so on and so forth. Imagine having a personal assistant constantly in your pocket to remind you of all kinds of little things, plus help you optimize your life, that's what AI can do for you.
Building up a pension
This may sound very abstract; how can I build up a pension with artificial intelligence? At first sight, these seem to be two things that are very far apart. However, BOTS by RevenYOU has identified an application of artificial intelligence that can be used by anyone who brings these two things together. A pension often consists of investments in different assets, but generally not very much is done with them. It remains in place for a long time before it can be paid out in old age to the rightful claimant. Only in practice could you achieve a much higher return by actively trading these assets.
BOTS by RevenYOU has developed a mobile application where trading robots, also called robots that use AI, trade on a daily basis in order to build up a pension. The robots trade with cryptocurrencies that are linked to currencies like the US dollar, but in the future also shares and the like. Anyone can start investing from an amount of €50 and build up a pension for the long term. With every action, the trading robot becomes smarter and more effective. In this way, you can put artificial intelligence to work for your old age today!
